Following Shane Gillis’ recent monologue on Saturday Night Live that aired on October 10, a wave of outrage has emerged from various entertainers and public figures, including country singer Maren Morris.
During his stint as host of the iconic NBC sketch show, Gillis made derogatory comments about women, referring to them as “whores.” His remarks drew immediate backlash from both viewers and fellow celebrities.
In his opening remarks, Gillis stated, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like whores now. Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe it. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it, the shorts. Have you seen the shorts? Those neon, they’re like the artificial bait colors. And the wrinkles go like around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look, you’re not allowed to look. For real, though, because they are filming. I’m in the background of like 10 TikToks right now.”
Maren Morris confronted this controversy directly with a video on Instagram set to her song “be a bitch.” In the video, text read, “me being a wh0re at the gym” as she playfully flipped off the camera. Her caption boldly stated, “leave my gym short wedgie out of it.” This post quickly gained traction, amassing over 1.2 million views and thousands of comments within a short timeframe.
Morris is not alone in her reaction to Gillis’ comments. Dan Levy, known for his role in Schitt’s Creek, expressed his disbelief over Gillis’ remarks, emphasizing that more men should actively defend women. He stated, “I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television. More men need to be standing up in opposition to it because it’s complacency that has created the environment in which women are sexually assaulted.”
This controversy has sparked discussions across various platforms, including a segment on the TODAY show. Meanwhile, Gillis’ monologue has generated over 2 million views and more than 11,000 comments on YouTube.
Shane Gillis previously hosted SNL in 2024 and 2025, marking a return five years after NBC let him go in 2019 due to resurfacing past comments deemed offensive towards Asian and LGBTQ+ communities.
