During the 2025 CMA Awards, Stephen Wilson Jr. captivated audiences with his heartfelt performance of Ben E. King’s iconic song “Stand By Me.” Months later, he shared in an episode of the Bobby Bones’ BobbyCast podcast that he has yet to rewatch his emotional rendition.
Wilson Jr. took to the stage of Bridgestone Arena with just his acoustic guitar, creating a profound silence as he performed. The spotlight focused solely on him as he delivered a song that resonates deeply with his own experiences.
The 1961 classic was first played by Wilson Jr. as a private tribute to his father, who passed away in 2018. Gaining popularity during the Live at the Print Shop series, he later brought this deeply emotional performance to the CMA Awards and eventually released a studio version.
As he sang, Wilson Jr.’s voice echoed throughout the arena, drawing the crowd into his emotional journey. The intensity of his delivery moved him to tears, ultimately leading to a standing ovation from the audience.
Reflecting on the experience, Wilson Jr. confessed his struggle with revisiting that night. He stated, “I don’t remember any of it and I still haven’t watched it. And I don’t think I ever will.”
When asked if he avoids watching the performance to preserve his memories, Wilson Jr. agreed, preferring to keep the experience untouched. He explained, “The point wasn’t for me to have this crazy reconnection with my father that night. It was about my father connecting with everyone else in the room.” This perspective emphasizes the shared emotional experience he created through the song.
As for the future, it remains uncertain whether Wilson Jr. will perform at the 2026 CMA Awards, as the lineup has yet to be announced. However, he is nominated for four awards this year, including New Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, as well as Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year for his single “Gary.” He is the sole songwriter of “Gary” and co-directed its music video.
Fans can catch “Country Music’s Biggest Night” on Wednesday, November 18, airing live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena at 8/7c on ABC and Disney+. The next day, it will be available on Hulu. Lainey Wilson will host the event for the third consecutive year, again taking on the role solo.
