Kacey Musgraves understands that being true to herself and advocating for her beliefs may not always be well-received. However, she has come to terms with this reality.
In a recent discussion on Sirius XM with Cody Alan, Musgraves reflected on the female trailblazers of country music and the significant influence they have had on her career. She paid tribute to iconic figures such as Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, noting that while they are celebrated today, both were known for challenging norms and speaking candidly, even if it meant upsetting some people. Musgraves believes their legacies demonstrate that women in the industry can break free from traditional molds, achieving success while being unapologetically themselves.
Musgraves expressed admiration for how these icons exemplify that women can be multifaceted. “You can excel in business, be humorous, embrace your body, and display confidence all at once,” she stated. This affirmation of versatility resonates deeply with her vision of womanhood in the music industry.
During the interview, Alan remarked on how Musgraves embodies the same fierce spirit as Parton, labeling her a “badass woman”. When asked if her frankness about various topics has led to criticism, Musgraves confidently replied that she refuses to let that deter her from being her genuine self. “I know I may have upset some people, but that doesn’t bother me. Not everyone has to like me,” she shared. “My stance on certain issues and the topics I write about come from a place of sincerity, even if I don’t always express them perfectly.”
As Musgraves navigates her career, she aims to embody lessons learned from Parton’s example, especially her generosity and commitment to philanthropy. “Seeing how Parton has consistently contributed to others inspires me to be more giving,” she noted. Musgraves appreciates how Parton has acted on her values, contributing to causes like children’s literacy and supporting her community. “It’s important to be a person who spreads kindness in this chaotic world,” she added.
In her conversation with Alan, Musgraves also discussed her latest album, Middle of Nowhere, sharing insights into her creative process and hinting at new projects she is excited to pursue.
