For Jamey Johnson, joining the Grand Ole Opry represented not just a career achievement but a dream he held since childhood. There were times in his journey when the goal felt almost unattainable, leading him to contemplate stepping away from the iconic stage.
During a discussion with Tracy Lawrence on the TL’s Road House podcast, Johnson opened up about the honor of becoming an Opry member after performing there for over two decades. He candidly shared that the absence of an invitation had become a source of frustration for him, describing it as “a burr in my saddle.”
“It truly is a humble honor to be part of the Opry,” Johnson stated. He emphasized the Opry’s role in representing the past, present, and future of country music. He noted that for many years, the organization was hesitant to welcome new members, which affected his enthusiasm for performing there. “I wanted to be a member ever since I moved to town, and I always felt destined to join,” he expressed.
Johnson believes that artists who are passionate about maintaining the integrity of country music should be the ones to receive membership to the Grand Ole Opry. “Who better to represent the Opry than those who care about its legacy? We should be the ones filling those ranks,” he stated.
Praising the current leadership of the Grand Ole Opry, Johnson acknowledged efforts to recognize artists who were previously overlooked during times when invitations were limited. He highlighted Dan Rogers’ commitment to inclusivity, noting that while Rogers wasn’t responsible for past decisions, he is working to amend them now.
As he celebrated his fourth year as a member, Johnson reflected on his long history with the Opry, having performed there for over 21 years. He remarked on the peculiarity of celebrating an official anniversary after such a lengthy tenure. “It feels a bit off that newcomers would only celebrate their first year after so long,” he noted.
In a heartfelt moment, Johnson expressed his hopes for Lawrence’s future at the Opry, wishing him the opportunity to perform and be honored as a member. While Lawrence appreciated the sentiment, he remained cautiously optimistic, stating, “I’d love to see that, but I’m not holding my breath.”
