The Seattle Sounders delivered one of their most dominant performances in club history, defeating Cruz Azul 7-0 at Lumen Field. This Leagues Cup Phase One opener was a statement of intent from the MLS side against the reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners.
Fans were treated to a stunning second-half display where Yeimar, Obed Vargas, Jesús Ferreira, Osaze De Rosario, Nouhou, and Pedro de la Vega — who scored twice — all found the net. The victory has cemented Seattle as a strong contender in this year’s tournament.

The Sounders wasted no time putting Cruz Azul under pressure. Cristian Roldan came close in the ninth minute with a powerful shot that narrowly missed the far post.
Jesús Ferreira thought he had scored in the 12th minute, but Alex Roldan was ruled offside during the buildup. Despite the setback, Seattle maintained control and created several chances, keeping Cruz Azul pinned in their own half.
Cruz Azul had one major opportunity through Omar Campos, whose shot rattled the post near the 20-minute mark. However, that was their only real threat in the first half.
Seattle broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Yeimar scored with a towering header from an Albert Rusnák corner. Just two minutes later, Obed Vargas doubled the lead with a deflected strike that looped over Cruz Azul’s goalkeeper Kevin Mier.
Ferreira had another goal disallowed for offside in the 54th minute, but he finally got his reward four minutes later. He met a flicked header from Cristian Roldan and finished clinically at the far post.
The fourth goal came in the 65th minute when Osaze De Rosario redirected a low cross from Ryan Kent into the net. Seattle was relentless, and Cruz Azul had no answers.
Substitute Pedro de la Vega made an immediate impact. In the 76th minute, he scored with his first touch, blasting a shot off the far post and in.
Seattle’s dominance continued when Nouhou added the sixth goal in the 88th minute, heading home a rebound after Mier’s save. In stoppage time, de la Vega capped off the historic performance with a spectacular volley, making it 7-0.
This goal was one of the best strikes of the season and highlighted why de la Vega is quickly becoming one of the most exciting players in the tournament.
1. De la Vega’s Incredible Form
Pedro de la Vega now has four goals in his last three matches. His move to the left wing has unlocked his full potential, giving Seattle a lethal attacking option.
2. Vargas Dominates Midfield
Obed Vargas, only 19 years old, bossed the midfield. His goal and assist demonstrated his maturity and technical skill against one of Liga MX’s strongest sides.
3. Yeimar’s Perfect Timing
Yeimar not only opened his 2025 account with a goal but also put in a commanding defensive performance to keep Cruz Azul scoreless.
With this victory, the Sounders extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches across all competitions. They now sit at the top of the Leagues Cup table.
Seattle will face Santos Laguna next on Sunday at Lumen Field before concluding Phase One against Club Tijuana next Wednesday.
