In a recent chat with the TODAY Show, the country singer discussed how his iconic facial hair came about and the excitement it has generated.

Green explained that his mustache was somewhat of a happy accident. He shared, “Every guy goes through that phase when they’re shaving and they try out different styles like a goatee or mustache. For me, it just stuck, and now it’s become a whole thing.”

Nowadays, Green finds it impossible to perform without spotting both real and fake mustaches among his fans, who are paying homage to his signature look. “I didn’t know I would become the mustache guy, but here I am,” he remarked with a smile.

The Alabama-born artist recognizes several advantages that come with his newfound notoriety. Not only does his mustache make him easily recognizable, but he also believes that it, combined with his cowboy hat, could give him an advantage as a coach on Season 30 of The Voice.

As he gears up for his role on the singing competition, Green identified Kelly Clarkson as his toughest competitor. He noted, “She likely has the best chance to win over country contestants. It’s tough because Adam [Levine] has been there for a long time, and Queen Latifah is extremely famous. But I think Kelly will try to grab some of my country acts.”

When asked about the funniest moments during filming, Green quickly pointed to host Carson Daly’s humor. “Carson’s had some hilarious moments backstage. Figuring out the coaches’ song has been creatively fun for all of us,” he laughed.

The Voice is set to make its return to NBC for its landmark 30th season on Monday, September 21 at 8/7c. The lineup features returning coaches Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson alongside Queen Latifah and newcomer Riley Green.

Meanwhile, the singer is busy with his largest headlining tour to date, the Cowboy As It Gets Tour, which will take him through major cities and arenas nationwide until December.
