Legendary country artist Ricky Skaggs is back in the spotlight with his latest single, “Say A Prayer,” marking his first new song in over ten years. Released through Skaggs Family Records and distributed by Virgin Music Group, this poignant track aims to resonate with listeners amid global challenges.
Written by Gordon Kennedy and Ben Cooper, “Say A Prayer” addresses pressing issues faced by communities around the globe. The song delves into themes of faith, introspection, and unity, encouraging listeners to come together in these trying times.
Prior to the release, Skaggs shared his thoughts backstage at CMA Fest. During a special performance alongside Carly Pearce and Molly Tuttle, he recounted the origins of the song. Initially recorded over 15 years ago, Skaggs had intended to feature it on his 2010 album, Mosaic, but decided against it at the time.
In his own words, Skaggs expressed the urgency behind releasing “Say A Prayer” now, given the current global climate. He stated, “With everything happening in our world today, it feels crucial to share a message like ‘Say A Prayer.’ The song reflects on war, greed, and the human experience of striving for success while remaining humble in prayer.”
Further elaborating on the song’s significance, Skaggs noted that it serves as a universal appeal for individuals to embrace their faith amidst grief and adversity. He hopes it inspires listeners to pause and reflect on their beliefs.
Stylistically, “Say A Prayer” showcases a rich blend of country, bluegrass, and rock elements. The instrumentation is distinctive, featuring instruments such as sitar, fiddle, mandolin, and banjo, alongside background vocals from Skaggs’ daughter, Molly.
The release of this single comes during a particularly active period for Skaggs. He continues to perform across the nation, headlining his own shows while also joining Dierks Bentley on select dates during the Off The Map Tour. Additionally, he is set to take the stage at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium on July 21 for the final night of the Bluegrass Nights series.
