Mitchell Tenpenny Celebrates Opry Benefit for Cancer Support

Mitchell Tenpenny’s Memorable Night at the Grand Ole Opry

Mitchell Tenpenny is still riding the wave of excitement from a remarkable benefit concert held at the iconic Grand Ole Opry. The country artist collaborated with the 10Penny Fund, several fellow musicians, and the historic venue to shine a light on the emotional, social, and mental health support essential for patients and families confronting cancer.

Reflecting on a Special Evening

The morning after the concert, Tenpenny shared his thoughts with Country Now, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support that made the event a success.

A New Approach to Fundraising

Over the years, Tenpenny has actively engaged in raising awareness and funds through live performances, sporting events, merchandise, and his annual October fundraiser. This year, he chose to elevate the experience by hosting a unique event at the Grand Ole Opry instead of his usual Cornhole Tournament. “I thought this could be a fantastic chance to spread awareness for the fund in a different way,” Tenpenny explained, acknowledging the challenge yet embracing the opportunity.

Support from the Opry and Fans

The Grand Ole Opry contributed by donating $5 from each ticket to the 10Penny Fund, attracting a full house eager to support the cause and enjoy a star-studded lineup curated by Tenpenny himself. The evening showcased performances from Opry member Chris Young, along with Lee Brice, Devin Dawson, Ernest, Sierra Hull, Jackie Lee, and Jo Dee Messina.

Personal Stories and Inspiration

To emphasize the personal connections to cancer, Tenpenny invited Macy Page, a cancer survivor and sister-in-law of artist Thomas Rhett, to serve as the guest announcer. “Meeting Macy and her family showed the joy of someone who has beaten cancer, providing hope to others facing similar battles,” he said.

Highlighting Songwriting and Community

A standout moment during the concert was a songwriter’s round featuring Tenpenny, Lee Brice, Ernest, and Devin Dawson. This rare format allowed artists to share the stories behind their songs in a more intimate setting. “It was a truly special experience, especially closing the night with Chris Young,” Tenpenny reflected.

New Partnership with Cancer Support Community

During the event, Tenpenny proudly announced his new collaboration with the Cancer Support Community (CSC), a global nonprofit dedicated to providing support to those affected by cancer. He founded the 10Penny Fund in 2018 after experiencing the emotional toll of cancer on his family, particularly following the loss of his father in 2014.

Addressing Mental Health Needs

Tenpenny expressed concern about the lack of access to mental health resources for cancer patients. He believes that better mental health support could have made a difference in his father’s experience. “It’s crucial to understand that asking for help is okay,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness.

Significant Donations and Future Plans

At the event, the 10Penny Fund presented a generous donation of $110,000 to CSC, with Chris Young contributing an additional $25,000. Tenpenny was moved by the generosity displayed that night. “It’s a reminder that goodness exists in the world,” he remarked.

A Night to Remember

Following the main event, Tenpenny hosted a post-show gathering where he performed additional songs and participated in a Q&A session. His wife, Meghan Patrick, surprised the audience with a performance alongside him. Reflecting on the inception of the fund, Tenpenny highlighted his desire to use his growing platform to support cancer patients and their families.

Looking Ahead

As they continue their partnership with CSC, Tenpenny and the 10Penny Fund aim to ensure that donations are used effectively to support individuals affected by cancer. “It was a night filled with music for a vital cause, and I’m grateful to have a clear direction for our contributions moving forward,” he concluded, still in awe of the special night.
