Legendary singer Lionel Richie is momentarily stepping back from his concert schedule. This decision follows a recent heart procedure, leading to the cancellation of three upcoming performances with Earth, Wind & Fire on their “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour.
The 77-year-old musician was admitted to the hospital earlier this week due to an irregular heartbeat. According to his representatives, Richie underwent a minor procedure that went smoothly.
Richie was treated for Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) through a method known as Atrial Fibrillation ablation. As described by the Mayo Clinic, this procedure addresses irregular and often rapid heartbeats. It employs either heat, cold energy, or high-energy electric pulses to create tiny scars in the heart, preventing faulty signals that lead to AFib from passing through.
Following the procedure, it has been reported that Richie is recovering well, although he will need some time before he returns to performing. This incident marks the third hospitalization for the singer in just three months.
In June, Richie was hospitalized after feeling dizzy and unwell during a performance in St. Paul. He humorously reassured his audience about his health issues, sharing, “You have no idea what I have been through in the last 24 hours…” He later expressed gratitude to fans on Instagram for their support during these challenging times.
In August, Richie voluntarily checked into the hospital for precautionary measures, staying in the ICU for three days to undergo tests related to his heart. However, recent sightings indicate that the “Hello” singer is in higher spirits, having been seen at a dinner event in Beverly Hills alongside his girlfriend, Lisa Parigi.
The recent health challenges have resulted in the cancellation of three shows in San Francisco, Chicago, and Columbus, originally scheduled for September 26, September 30, and October 2, respectively.
As for his role as a judge on American Idol, there is no confirmation yet regarding his participation in the upcoming season alongside judges Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood. While virtual auditions for Season 25 are already taking place, ABC has not released the complete details of the judging panel.
