Lee Brice has always used his albums to mirror his life’s journey, and this is especially true for his latest work, Sunriser (All-Nighter). In an exclusive discussion, Brice explained how this album underwent significant transformation during its creation.
Initially, Brice aimed to produce a 17-track album under a different title. However, as he spent years developing those songs, his creative and personal perspectives shifted. Once he completed that initial collection, he resumed writing and collaborated with fellow songwriters during his travels, leading to a fresh set of songs inspired by his recent life experiences.
Instead of reserving these new songs for a future project, Brice believed they belonged in this album, expanding it to a 32-track compilation that has evolved over three years. He explained, “Since the first part took so long, I realized I had new stories to tell, so I included those songs in the album.”
The title Sunriser emerged from a series of late-night songwriting sessions. Brice reminisced about writing until dawn and how one morning, while witnessing the sunrise, he had a profound realization. He described a conversation with his driver about how sunrises require effort to appreciate, contrasting them with sunsets that anyone can see at the end of a day.
This insight gave Brice a deeper meaning behind something as routine as a sunrise, emphasizing the hard work required to experience it. The album Sunriser (All-Nighter) reflects Brice’s journey from late-night escapades to his roles as a husband and father, honoring those who labor through the night or rise early.
Brice’s album showcases various facets of his life, addressing themes of young love, fatherhood, and the wisdom gained over time. The songs fluctuate from lively anthems to heartfelt ballads exploring loss and faith. He shared, “I appreciate all genres of music, and my work reflects that diversity, moving from energetic tracks to meaningful ballads.”
Tracks like “Truck Bed Mixtape” and “Daddy Don’t Care” offer intimate glimpses into Brice’s life, particularly his experiences as a father. When his daughter Trulee expressed her desire for a song, he crafted two tracks for her. Ultimately, she chose “Daddy Don’t Care” for the album.
Another standout moment is “Never Meet Your Heroes,” featuring Vince Gill, whom Brice considers a musical icon. The connection to this song was immediate, as it resonated with memories of his grandfather. Gill agreed to collaborate without hesitation, showcasing their mutual respect and admiration.
The album concludes with “When The Kingdom Comes,” which Brice regards as the most significant track. It encapsulates his faith journey and the influence of his upbringing. He feels a deep connection to this song, which he often performs live.
As Lee Brice embarks on his Sunriser Tour across Canada and the U.S., he shares the stories behind this expansive 32-track collection, blending new songs into his performances and highlighting the emotional depth of his work.
