Lainey Wilson recently shared a touching tribute to her friend and musical inspiration, Dolly Parton. In her heartfelt message, Wilson expressed the profound connection she felt with Parton long before they ever met, and reminisced about the unique friendship they cultivated over the years.
“My Dolly. 💛 It felt like you were my friend even before our paths crossed. You had a way of making everyone feel that connection. Once we became friends, we certainly had plenty to discuss,” Wilson began.
The Louisiana singer reflected on their last conversation, which occurred just weeks prior to Parton’s passing. During this call, they discussed various facets of the music industry, the sacrifices associated with their careers, their marriages, and their shared faith.
“I’m so grateful you reached out a couple of weeks ago. We talked about the industry, the sacrifices involved, and how special Carl Dean was to you. You reminded me that while Duck lets me be myself, I should also allow him to be himself,” Wilson recalled.
Wilson also shared the spiritual guidance Parton provided, including advice on taking her time with reading the Bible. “You suggested I take my time with the book of Revelation and even go back to Psalms for a moment to gather my thoughts. We both feel that we’re called to this industry, and you expressed that you didn’t think your journey was over. I believe you are still with us in spirit,” she added.
In her closing thoughts, Wilson reflected on the profound influence Parton had on her and many others, stressing that the love and light Parton exuded during her life will forever remain. “The love and light you brought to the world are everlasting. I’m thankful that God gifted you with such talent and allowed us to share in your journey. I look forward to reuniting in heaven, where I know you will still be saying, ‘don’t mess up your hair, Lainey girl.’ You will always hold a special place in my heart, my dear friend.”
Wilson’s admiration for Parton dates back to before their friendship. In 2020, she released the song “WWDD,” inspired by the country legend, asking, “What would Dolly do?” The lyrics reflect Parton’s strength and kindness, illustrating the impact she had on Wilson’s artistry.
Years later, both artists collaborated on a new version of “Mama He’s Crazy” by The Judds for a tribute album. Although their friendship blossomed over the years, they did not meet face-to-face until the 2023 ACM Awards, where Parton presented Wilson with the Female Artist of the Year award.
