John Rich is encouraging Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis to officially designate John Anderson’s beloved track “Seminole Wind” as the state song of Florida.
Rich made his appeal on social media this week after DeSantis paid tribute to Anderson following his recent passing on the platform X.
DeSantis expressed his condolences, stating, “RIP to a great country artist and the pride of Apopka, FL, John Anderson. ‘Seminole Wind’ is one of the best songs of all time about Florida.”
In response, Rich shared a heartfelt suggestion, encouraging the governor to consider elevating the song’s status.
He tweeted, “@RonDeSantis should consider making ‘Seminole Wind’ the official state song of Florida. John Anderson captured the spirit of this state in his song and was a native-born Floridian. Gov DeSantis, would you consider making that happen? A bunch of us would fly down if you would.”
This proposal resonates well, especially as Anderson was a dedicated Florida native. The song vividly describes the landscape and history of the state, mentioning iconic locations like the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee, along with Osceola, the prominent Seminole leader.
Rich and Anderson shared a deep friendship, with Rich admiring Anderson not just as a colleague but as a mentor. The news of Anderson’s passing hit Rich particularly hard, leading him to share an emotional tribute.
Rich expressed his grief, stating, “I’ve just learned that my favorite country artist of all time, and a man I called ‘Uncle John’ for the past 20 years has passed away. The great and unmatched John Anderson…He loved Jesus, his family, and his country. He influenced me immensely. I love you, Uncle John.”
Rich later posted another touching message for Anderson, saying, “Love ya John A…you were a hero to me, and many others. I bet Jesus just handed you a golden Gibson and asked you to sing him a few. Till I see you again, we’ll keep your memory and music alive.”
The day following Anderson’s death, Rich revealed that processing this loss was becoming increasingly challenging. “Last night I was just in shock over losing John Anderson, now I feel like I’m gonna burst out crying. This man was a giant in many ways, and someone I loved and admired deeply. He was fierce but kind, rough yet refined…He was living, breathing poetry. A truly great man.”
Throughout their friendship, Rich and Anderson collaborated on several songwriting projects, with Rich stating that “Shutting Detroit Down” was one of their standout creations.
John Anderson, a Country Music Hall of Famer and member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 21. His unique voice and signature style left an indelible mark on country music with timeless hits such as “Swingin’,” “Seminole Wind,” and “Straight Tequila Night.”
