John Anderson’s ‘Seminole Wind’ Becomes Florida’s Anthem

Florida Honors John Anderson with Official Anthem Designation

In a significant move, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially declared John Anderson’s beloved song “Seminole Wind” as the state anthem. This announcement was made via social media, where the Governor also detailed plans to commemorate the late country artist’s contributions in his hometown of Apopka.

Plans to Honor Anderson’s Legacy

Along with the announcement, DeSantis stated that the Department of State will install historic markers in Apopka to recognize Anderson’s impact on Florida’s cultural heritage. Furthermore, he has instructed the Department of Environmental Protection to collaborate with the St. Johns River Water Management District to name a wildlife drive and trail system in the Lake Apopka North Shore area after Anderson, officially calling it the John Anderson Wildlife Drive and Trail System.

Anderson’s Connection to Florida

The executive order emphasizes John Anderson’s deep-rooted ties to Florida, acknowledging how his music has celebrated the state’s rich history and its stunning natural landscapes. The order highlights that Anderson was born on December 13, 1954, in Apopka, where his family has lived for generations. Growing up amidst Florida’s natural beauty, Anderson’s experiences significantly influenced his songwriting.

A Tribute Following His Passing

This announcement comes shortly after the passing of Anderson, who died peacefully in his sleep on October 21 at the age of 71. His longtime friend and collaborator, John Rich, had previously urged Governor DeSantis to consider designating “Seminole Wind” as Florida’s official state song, citing its embodiment of the state’s spirit and Anderson’s Floridian roots.

About ‘Seminole Wind’

“Seminole Wind,” released in August 1992, showcases Anderson’s ability to weave Florida’s landscapes and stories into his music, making it a fitting tribute to his legacy. The song reflects significant landmarks such as the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee, along with references to the prominent Seminole leader Osceola. Anderson’s music, including hits like “Swingin’” and “Straight Tequila Night,” earned him a place in both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Final Farewell

John Anderson was laid to rest in a private ceremony, marking the end of a remarkable life that celebrated the essence of Florida through his music.
