Many iPhone users believe that charging their phone to 100% is the best way to keep it running smoothly. However, experts warn that doing so every day can actually shorten your battery’s lifespan over time.
According to Mark Patrick, Director of Technical Content at Mouser Electronics, lithium-ion batteries—like the one inside your iPhone—have a limited number of charge cycles. Typically, you get between 500 and 800 full cycles. Each cycle counts when the battery discharges from 100% down to 0% and then charges back up again. Charging your iPhone to full capacity every day speeds up this process and may cause your battery health to decline within a couple of years.
To protect your iPhone’s battery, keep its charge between 20% and 80%. Allowing your phone to hit 0% or stay at 100% for long periods puts unnecessary stress on the battery. By sticking to this sweet spot, you can extend the overall lifespan of your device.
Apple has built an Optimized Battery Charging option into iPhones to help users manage battery wear. When turned on, your iPhone learns your charging habits and delays charging past 80% until you actually need it. This feature reduces the time your battery spends at full charge, minimizing long-term damage. Occasionally, the phone may still charge to 100% for calibration purposes, and that’s completely normal.
It may feel natural to keep your iPhone fully charged, but doing so consistently can shorten its battery life. By keeping the charge between 20% and 80%, using Apple’s optimized charging feature, and following smart charging habits, you’ll make sure your iPhone battery stays healthy for years.
