The FBI and police are investigating reports of an armed person near UMass Lowell after a video circulated online Wednesday. The footage appeared to show a man walking with a gun on a sidewalk near the university.
Authorities confirmed there were no reports of shots fired.
UMass Lowell issued a shelter-in-place order as police searched for the suspect. The order was lifted shortly after 5 p.m., when officials determined the person was no longer in the area.
All classes and campus events for the day canceled.
A large police presence will remain overnight.
Officers will be stationed at residence halls to ensure safety.
Nearby Middlesex Community College also canceled classes in Bedford and Lowell due to increased police activity and traffic delays.
FBI Boston confirmed agents are on scene and working with local and state law enforcement. In a post on X, they urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid the area.
Massachusetts State Police also addressed the situation:
“We are aware of a video circulating of a person who appears to be armed walking in Lowell near the Riverview Suites on Middlesex Street. State and Local Police have responded to the area to further investigate. Anyone with relevant information should call 911.”
The ATF also responded to assist with the investigation.
The Lowell Police Department reported heightened police activity in several areas, including Middlesex Street, Pawtucket Street, and Broadway Street.
Representative Lori Trahan (D-Mass.) stated she is actively monitoring the situation and is in close contact with local officials.
She posted: “If you are in Lowell, please follow directions from @LowellPD and @UMassLowell.”
UMass Lowell is a public research university located about 40 miles north of Boston.
The Lowell Police Department has not provided further details as the investigation continues.
FBI Boston declined to comment beyond confirming their involvement.
