This winter, audiences will witness the incredible life story of Dolly Parton as it comes to life on Broadway with the eagerly awaited opening of DOLLY: A True Original Musical. Following its record-breaking premiere in Nashville, this production is set to captivate New York theatergoers with Parton’s narrative conveyed through her own lyrics and timeless melodies.
DOLLY: A True Original Musical will officially debut on Tuesday, January 19, 2027, coinciding perfectly with Dolly Parton’s 81st birthday. Fans won’t have to wait until then to experience the show, as preview performances will begin on Monday, December 7, 2026, providing a sneak peek ahead of the grand opening.
The musical features a combination of Dolly Parton’s beloved hits alongside new tracks specifically composed for this stage adaptation. The production boasts a book by Parton herself and Maria S. Schlatter, a two-time Emmy Award recipient. Directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, the show promises to deliver a rich musical experience.
Leading the creative efforts is Stephen Oremus, a two-time Tony and Grammy winner, serving as music supervisor, while Charity Wicks takes on the role of music director. The orchestration is handled by John Clancy, with long-time collaborator Kent Wells providing musical consulting, and arrangements from Richard Dennison and Gregg Perry, who have collaborated with Parton for many years.
As of now, the casting details for the Broadway production remain under wraps, with announcements expected in the near future. Updates about cast members and creative team members will be shared soon.
Dolly Parton expressed her enthusiasm for bringing her story to the Broadway stage, stating, “My whole life has been a musical. A grand ole opera really! We have a wonderful director, sets, costumes, choreography, music, and all the essentials to create a fantastic show! I can’t wait to see you there!”
Director Bartlett Sher shared insights on the production, noting that audiences will discover a new dimension of Dolly’s life. He remarked, “During our world premiere in Nashville, I was overwhelmed by the deep connection audiences have with Dolly. This musical allows her to share her unfiltered story in her own words. We aim to show that there’s much more to her than rhinestones.”
Adam Speers from ATG Productions reflected on the impact Dolly has had on the world, emphasizing her extraordinary talent and commitment to kindness. He highlighted that the Broadway production will deepen storytelling and fully capture the essence of Dolly’s spirit, making the opening on her birthday a momentous celebration.
Fans can register on the musical’s official website for an exclusive pre-sale opportunity before general tickets become available. Eligible Capital One cardholders will also benefit from early access during this pre-sale period. General ticket sales are already underway, with performances scheduled through November 21, 2027.
This production is generally suitable for most audiences, though it may not be appropriate for children aged 8 and under due to certain content.
Before its Broadway run, DOLLY: A True Original Musical premiered in Nashville at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, where it sold out its entire run, achieving record-breaking success. This musical is a testament to Parton’s enduring relationship with Belmont University, highlighted by initiatives like Dolly U and her induction into the university’s Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum.
