Danielle Spencer Dead at 60 After Long Cancer Battle

Danielle Spencer, best known for her role as Dee Thomas on the hit 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, has died at the age of 60. The beloved actress passed away Monday in a Richmond, Virginia hospital after a courageous fight against cancer, according to Intime Sky News.

A Career That Made TV History

Spencer became a household name for her witty and memorable performance as Dee, the younger sister of Roger “Raj” Thomas. Her character’s sharp comebacks, including the iconic line “Ooooh, I’m gonna tell Mama!”, cemented her place in television history.

Beyond her acting career, Spencer followed her passion for animals, becoming a veterinarian in 1993. Her dedication to animal welfare earned her comparisons to the late Betty White.

Her Health Struggles and Brave Spirit

In 2014, Spencer was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. Four years later, she required emergency brain surgery to address internal bleeding. Friends, family, and fans rallied around her, even launching a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical costs.

Her What’s Happening!! co-star Haywood Nelson praised her resilience.

“She suffered for a very long time but did it with a great deal of courage,” Nelson told reporters.

Heartfelt Tributes From Friends and Co-Stars

Nelson honored her life on social media, calling her “a brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior” and “our Shero.” He highlighted her roles as a daughter, sister, animal advocate, and cancer heroine.

Actress Holly Robinson Peete also remembered Spencer fondly, sharing on X:

“We met in 1977 when we were just 13. We hit it off immediately… This loss is just gutting.”

Life Lessons and Words of Wisdom

Spencer often spoke about the importance of joy and living in the moment. In a 2016 interview, she advised:

“You really have to live life for you at that minute… Be lighthearted and be happy while you’re here.”

Her passion for veterinary medicine also reflected her love for animals and science. In a 1985 interview, she explained her interest in “chemistry, bacteriology, and the body,” which fueled her career change.
