In a recent interview with CBS Mornings, Cody Johnson opened up about his ascent in the music industry. He shared that when he first aimed to sign with a Nashville label, the executives suggested changes to his image that didn’t align with who he really is.
Johnson explained to CBS host Jan Crawford that the executives wanted him to adopt a different look, saying, “They wanted a baseball cap, which I have nothing against, but it was the approach.” He elaborated that their message implied, “You’re great, but once we change you, you’ll make it.”
Feeling frustrated by the experience, Johnson decided to walk away from the opportunity. He recalled, “I tipped my hat and said, ‘Thank you for your time.’” Following this, he returned to Texas, where he persisted as an independent artist, selling CDs from his car and performing at various venues.
Reflecting on his early days, Johnson said, “Had to go out and play bars and honky-tonks and cut my teeth doing it the hard way.” He described the stress of financial instability and the challenges of being away from his family, which made the journey even more difficult.
Despite the hardships, Johnson was resolute in his pursuit of success, stating, “I think that I just had decided at that point that no matter what, no matter how hard, no matter how high the mountain, I will not back down. I will not quit.”
Years later, the same Nashville labels that had once dismissed him began to take notice of his unwavering commitment to authenticity. Eventually, he signed with Warner Music Nashville and made significant strides in his career, achieving his first No. 1 hit in 2018 with “’Til You Can’t,” followed by other successful singles.
Now, Cody Johnson stands as a celebrated figure in country music, selling out venues nationwide and internationally. While he always dreamed of this level of success, he admits he never thought he would reach such heights, saying, “Truthfully, in my core, I didn’t feel I was capable of attaining a goal that big.”
As he approaches the 60th Annual CMA Awards this year, Johnson has received four nominations, including the prestigious Entertainer of the Year award. His journey exemplifies the power of staying true to oneself, and it’s clear that his decision to remain authentic has paid off.
