After undergoing surgery for a burst eardrum at the close of 2025, Cody Johnson found himself sidelined for nearly three months. This unanticipated hiatus turned out to be a pivotal moment in shaping his latest album, Banks of the Trinity, in ways he had not foreseen.
The Texas-born artist acknowledges that the album would have taken a different path had he not been forced off the tour circuit. During his recovery, he received numerous songs that he stored in his Dropbox, tracks he likely would not have had time to evaluate otherwise.
“Honestly, it would’ve been a completely different album,” Johnson shared with Country Now and other media outlets.
Johnson drew parallels between this experience and the lockdown of 2020, where he initially faced feelings of anxiety about his career’s future. However, as he leaned into his faith, he realized the break was potentially beneficial.
“Banks of the Trinity wouldn’t be what it is without those three months. I’m grateful for that strange twist of fate that gave me the time off,” he stated. “I thought it was going to hurt my career, but this has been one of my best years on the road. Everything unfolds for a reason; when challenges arise, trust in the journey.”
The resulting 16-track collection isn’t structured as a concept album but consistently reflects Johnson’s life and Texas upbringing. He may not have penned every song, but his personal experiences and influences resonate throughout the project, especially in the album art.
The cover showcases Lawrence’s Grocery Store, a small-town store significant to his childhood, providing fans with a glimpse of the place described in the title track. Johnson recalls riding his bike two miles down a dirt road to grab groceries from the store, run by Harold “Hootie” Lawrence and his wife, Lela.
Johnson’s upbringing also inspires several tracks, including “Cricket On A Hook,” which reminisces about carefree summers at the lake, and the album’s closing number, “Yippy Ty Oh Hey Hey,” which tells a cowboy story set along the Trinity River.
“I envisioned that whether you’re holding a vinyl or viewing clips online, you get a sense of my roots. The title track paints a picture of growing up in a rural town by the Trinity River,” he explained.
Throughout the album, listeners can anticipate a wide array of musical styles. From the playful tone of “Horseback,” the lead radio single, to collaborations like “Fool Proof” with Brothers Osborne and “Shoot The Bull” featuring Luke Combs. Each song offers something unique, with topics ranging from humorous to thought-provoking.
In assembling Banks of the Trinity, Johnson aimed for a diverse sound palette. He noted that recent albums from unnamed artists felt monotonous, motivating him to create an album full of variety.
“As a kid, I listened to all sorts of music. My playlists are eclectic, and I want my album to reflect that diversity. It’s important for the listener not to feel bored,” he emphasized.
Now in a fulfilling phase of his career, Johnson acknowledges that at nearly 39, he feels healthier and happier than ever, with a thriving family life and successful career. He credits his upbringing and the challenges he faced as instrumental in shaping who he is today.
If given the chance to tell his younger self about his current success, Johnson would refrain, believing that struggles are crucial for growth. “Those tough times forged who I am. I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey,” he concluded.
Produced by Trent Willmon, Banks of the Trinity represents Johnson’s sixth studio album. It coincides with his 2026 tour, which is set to continue in Milwaukee, WI, before heading to Nashville for Alan Jackson’s farewell concert on June 27.
