Cody Johnson and Luke Combs share a friendship that allows them to escape the hectic environment of the music industry. When they are together, they focus on simple discussions about sports, family, and life, creating a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos. This camaraderie is evident in their collaboration on the song “Shoot The Bull,” which is a highlight of Johnson’s latest album, Banks of the Trinity.
During an interview on The Kelleigh Bannen Show on Apple Music Country, Johnson expressed how he finds comfort in Combs’s presence, even in professional settings. He explained that when surrounded by the whirlwind of the industry, he can always turn to Combs for a moment of respite.
Johnson elaborated, “It’s like you see the guy in the room where you’re like, ‘I can totally just go sit in the corner and BS with this guy.’ While the industry buzzes around us, we’re discussing everything from college football results to plans for hunting trips in Texas, or even investment tips on watches.”
The two artists have supported each other through various highs and lows over the years. At the ACM Awards in May, Johnson dedicated his first ACM Entertainer of the Year award to Combs, recognizing his dedication to country music. He recalled witnessing Combs miss the birth of his second son, Beau, while performing overseas.
Reflecting on that night in Australia, Johnson shared, “I was there when his wife gave birth, and I saw how devastated he was to miss it while performing in a sold-out arena. Yet, the next night, he took the stage and delivered an incredible performance, sharing the essence of country music with fans in Australia.”
Johnson also mentioned that Combs was one of the first people he reached out to for advice regarding a recent financial decision in his career. After receiving valuable insights from Combs, the conversation quickly returned to their usual friendly banter.
“I told him, ‘I have no pride in this. You’re further along in your career. What would you do?” Johnson recounted. Combs offered helpful advice, and soon after, they were chatting casually about family and enjoying FaceTime with Johnson’s kids, who were excited to see Combs on the screen.
The strong bond between Johnson and Combs shines through in their new duet, “Shoot The Bull.” This upbeat track, written by Ray Fulcher, Casey Brown, Josh Phillips, and Drew Parker, captures the essence of two friends letting loose and enjoying life.
The song’s lyrics reflect their friendship and the need to unwind from daily pressures. They sing about enjoying cold beers, sharing stories, and reminiscing about their roots in Texas and North Carolina. The chorus encourages listeners to relax, crank up some music, and forget their troubles.
“Shoot The Bull” is featured on Cody Johnson’s recently released album, Banks of the Trinity. This collaboration is not their first; they previously toured together in 2023, with Johnson opening for Combs in Australia and New Zealand. Fans are hopeful this won’t be the last time these two talented artists join forces.
