On the evening of October 7, the CMA Foundation gathered at The Pinnacle in Nashville to commemorate ten years of recognizing the pivotal role that music educators play in shaping future musicians during its 10th Annual Music Teachers of Excellence ceremony.
This milestone event united music educators, artists, and industry leaders, focusing on the profound influence of music education. The celebration highlighted those dedicated teachers who provide students with the chance to express themselves through music.
The Music Teachers of Excellence program is the flagship initiative of the CMA Foundation. It honors 30 outstanding music educators from across the nation for their commitment to delivering exceptional music education to students and their communities.
Before the awards were presented, artists like Tucker Wetmore, Marcus King, and Zac Brown performed, while several country musicians shared heartfelt anecdotes about the music teachers who significantly influenced their lives and careers.
Tucker Wetmore expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to honor music educators during the ceremony. Although he never received formal instrument lessons, a pivotal music teacher introduced him to the piano, igniting his passion for music.
Reflecting on his early experiences, Wetmore recalled, “When I was nine or ten, sitting at the piano changed my life. Music education is vital for children wanting to pursue it and provides a way to express their emotions.”
Other artists also shared their stories of inspirational music teachers. Frank Ray acknowledged that music teachers are fundamental to the careers of many in the industry, emphasizing their essential role in nurturing future talent. Mae Estes highlighted how these “unsung heroes” deserve recognition for building confidence in young musicians.
Keith Urban took the stage to honor Mrs. Grimmer, his music teacher from Australia, who played a crucial role in his musical development by encouraging creativity over traditional music theory. Urban credited her belief in him for his success and urged the audience to continue valuing music education.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the inaugural CMA Foundation Music Education Impact Award to Joe Galante, recognizing his significant contributions to expanding access to music education and supporting the foundation’s initiatives.
The ceremony concluded with the announcement of the 2026 CMA Foundation Music Teachers of Excellence, celebrating 30 educators making a lasting impact on their students and communities.
