On Wednesday night, Chris Stapleton honored the legendary Dolly Parton with a heartfelt performance, just a day after her passing.
The country music star was performing at the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York, as part of his All-American Road Show Tour. In the middle of his set, he paused from his original songs to pay his respects to Parton, following the announcement of her death on August 25.
Parton’s nephew and security chief, Bryan Seaver, shared the sad news of her death, describing her as a beloved sister, aunt, and grandmother. She had been hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville on August 21 due to kidney and autoimmune complications. Reports later revealed that she had been privately battling cancer.
As tributes and condolences poured in from fans worldwide, Stapleton delivered a moving homage on stage. The audience fell silent as a black-and-white image of Parton appeared on the screen and he began his rendition of her iconic song, “I Will Always Love You.” This heartfelt performance became one of the most touching tributes to the late star.
Though many have covered this timeless classic, Stapleton’s rendition stood out with his gritty voice and impressive range, adding a soulful depth that highlighted the emotion of Parton’s lyrics. The crowd joined in for a powerful singalong, celebrating the multifaceted artist’s legacy.
After the performance, Stapleton reflected on the profound influence Parton had on music and those fortunate enough to know her. He urged the audience to emulate her kindness and generosity.
“Dolly Parton was one of the greatest musical talents and one of the kindest people we’ve ever had on this planet,” he said. “We should be grateful for her contributions and strive to follow her example. I had the honor of meeting her a few times, and she was everything she aspired to be. We will all miss her deeply. I miss her tonight and will miss her every night to come,” he shared.
Stapleton and Parton collaborated on several occasions, including a cover of Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” for her 2023 album, Rockstar. The country music community mourns the loss of Parton, whose legacy will endure through her music, philanthropy, and numerous projects that exemplified her dedication throughout her illustrious career.
