A remarkable journey began months ago when Ashley McBryde met 11-year-old Sawyer June backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. This encounter has now come full circle, as McBryde is helping Sawyer fulfill her dream of performing at this iconic venue.
McBryde first crossed paths with Sawyer in February during a backstage tour of the Opry. Sawyer and her family were in Nashville and attended a show at the famous location. McBryde noticed the young girl enthusiastically singing along to her song “Light On In the Kitchen,” which sparked a connection.
After the performance, McBryde met Sawyer and her family backstage. They exchanged pleasantries, with Sawyer’s family even gifting McBryde some pecans from their farm, a treat she enjoys. During their chat, Sawyer’s mother revealed that she also sings, particularly well known for performing “Bible And A .44.”
Impressed by Sawyer’s talent, McBryde invited her to sing a few lines of the song together. The two harmonized beautifully, creating a memorable experience that left McBryde in awe of Sawyer’s skills and enthusiasm. After this meeting, McBryde decided to follow Sawyer on social media to keep track of her budding musical career.
Recently, during a visit to the WSM studio, McBryde had the chance to surprise Sawyer with some exciting news. While Sawyer was on-air with host Eryn Cooper, McBryde called in to check on her and mentioned her recent performance on Nashville’s lower Broadway.
During the call, McBryde expressed her happiness about their friendship and then shared some thrilling news. She invited Sawyer to step into the circle of the Grand Ole Opry to make her debut. Overwhelmed with emotion, Sawyer took a moment to absorb the surprise before joyfully accepting the invitation, calling McBryde “the best friend I’ve ever had.”
McBryde reassured Sawyer, saying she had always believed in her talent and was excited to see her shine on stage. Sawyer expressed immense gratitude, calling the invitation the biggest honor of her life. The Grand Ole Opry has yet to announce the date for Sawyer’s inaugural performance, but the anticipation is palpable.
