Ashley McBryde Stays True to Herself Against Industry Pressure

Ashley McBryde’s Commitment to Authenticity

Despite her rising success, Ashley McBryde has always prioritized authenticity. Since the inception of her career, she has fiercely defended her true self, even at the risk of losing opportunities.

New Music Reflects Deep Roots

In early 2026, McBryde unveiled a new track that uses “Arkansas Mud” as a metaphor for her unchangeable essence. The song highlights her strong roots and emphasizes that no external influences can alter her true identity.

A Defiant Stance Against Industry Norms

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, McBryde described the day she penned the song with Chris Tompkins and Jessie Jo Dillon as a moment of defiance. Reflecting on her initial experiences in Nashville, she recalled how executives attempted to alter her appearance to fit the country music mold.

“They suggested I lose my curly hair and go blonde. I responded with, ‘Go sit by yourself.’ Unlike many of my counterparts, I’m not tall or blonde and I sport tattoos,” McBryde recounted.

Rejecting Conventional Advice

She also faced pressure to modify her wardrobe to align with traditional country styles, such as adding fringe and tucking her pants into her boots. McBryde humorously recalled her skepticism about these suggestions, stating, “I’ve tried it, but it looked ridiculous.”

Seeing this as “terrible advice,” she made it clear that she wouldn’t conform and instead voiced her discomfort with the expectations placed upon her. “If something makes me uncomfortable, it’s now your problem. You will feel as uncomfortable as I do,” she explained.

Influences from Her Background

McBryde takes immense pride in her roots, having grown up immersed in bluegrass and roots music in Arkansas. This upbringing continues to inform her music and storytelling style to this day.

“I was fortunate to be introduced to bluegrass festivals from a very young age. My summers and falls were filled with live music, showcasing raw talent and storytelling,” she shared.

The Importance of Storytelling in Her Music

Her early experiences fostered a deep appreciation for narrative-driven music. “Much of my work features storytelling, often juxtaposing sad lyrics with a hopeful tone, making it engaging for listeners. The essence of building music from an acoustic guitar remains integral to my creative process,” McBryde noted.

Connecting with Fans on Tour

Currently, McBryde is sharing her authentic self through her headlining “Into the Wild Tour.” She expressed her joy in creating an environment where fans feel included, highlighting the unique ways her audience engages with her performance.

“Our fans are doing remarkable things, like creating picket fences with razor wire during the show. They aren’t just there to watch; they’re part of the experience. This sense of community is something we desperately need, especially during challenging times,” she said.

Ultimately, McBryde aims to create a space where attendees feel good for at least 90 minutes, reciprocating the energy and support she feels from them.
