Zach John King Reflects on Debut Album Journey

Zach John King’s Debut Album Journey

Zach John King didn’t plan to create his debut album all at once. Instead, his album I’m What You Get evolved gradually as he penned songs over time. After sifting through numerous creations, he selected 20 tracks that provide an authentic glimpse into his life, sharing personal experiences about family and sacrifice.

Album Release and Excitement

His first full-length album was released on August 28, and he expressed his excitement to finally share his hard work with the world. “I hope people take it and run with it. I mean, it’s theirs. Once it’s out, it’s theirs. It’s not mine anymore,” he explained.

The Recording Process

For King, the album only became tangible towards the end of its recording phase. He felt an immense sense of satisfaction when he and his team listened to the final product and realized they had created something they were proud of. “By the end of the process, there was this really cool moment where we started to see it coming together. To actually be proud of it was a whole other thing,” he reflected.

A Personal Touch

The Georgia-born artist co-produced the album with Ryan Wilson, crafting a collection that reflects his upbringing, love, heartbreak, and the importance of staying true to his roots as he progresses in his career. He merges classic country sounds with indie rock influences, resulting in a unique musical style.

Track Selection and Intent

King understands that fans have eagerly awaited his debut, and he aimed to deliver something worth the anticipation. He wanted to create an intentional narrative about himself, ensuring there were no tracks he considered to be filler. “We wanted it to be a lot of songs for people to dig into,” he shared.

Defining the Album’s Title

The title track, I’m What You Get, came to him while recording a song he wrote two years earlier. He felt an instant connection to it, leading him to declare it as the title track. “This is the song that will put a face to this album,” he mused.

Standout Tracks and Collaborations

While each track shines, some notably stand out, including his current radio single, Get To Drinkin’, which is climbing the charts. Additionally, he features collaborations with Bayker Blankenship, Brent Cobb, and Brooks & Dunn, with the latter being a significant highlight of his debut album.

Personal Connection Through Music

King’s intention is for listeners to find pieces of themselves within his songs. He believes that the more specific he is in his storytelling, the more relatable the music becomes. His previous release, How To Not, particularly resonates, as it reflects his relationship with his late father.

Final Thoughts on the Album

The album concludes with What I’m Giving Up, where King contemplates the sacrifices tied to a music career. He aims to leave listeners with a thought-provoking question about the value of his pursuits. “I love the idea of ending a project on a question. It allows for reflection beyond the album’s duration,” he said.

Upcoming Tours and Fan Connection

As he prepares for his upcoming shows and the Get To Drinkin’ Tour starting October 1, King is eager to connect with fans. “I hope you walk in feeling like you’re part of the family,” he expressed, looking forward to building lasting relationships through his music.
